You can be grateful for something and also acknowledge that maybe it wasn't exactly the best thing. Vitiis nemo sine nascitur. Nobody's perfect.

There's a second part to that, but I don't remember what it is. I tried to take Latin, but I was better at Spanish. All I remember is how to say hello and thank you.

Well, Spanish is likely to serve you better, out here, anyway. Still plenty of native speakers, in the region. Some even from before the War.
